The history of vaping goes back many years. Much credit is given to Hon Lik, who patented the first nicotine-based electronic cigarette in 2003. However, earlier in 1963, Herbert Gilbert patented the first non-tobacco cigarette that worked using heated, moist, flavored air.
Although Gilbert invented the first electronic cigarette, he wasn’t successful in commercializing it. Hon Lik, on the other hand, successfully manufactured and sold his device worldwide. It must be mentioned, however, that the history of vaping goes further back than these two individuals to Joseph Robinson, who was the first person to come up with the idea of an e-cig in 1927.
The company Hon Lik worked for, Ruyan Group, helped him market his invention worldwide. In 2006, the electronic cigarette was introduced in Europe, and in 2007 to the United States.
Hon Lik electronic cigarette included a battery, a plastic cartridge, and a heating element. The device enabled users to vape nicotine without any combustion. Many manufacturers worldwide soon started making vaping devices.
In 2006, Umer and Tariq Sheikh, two brothers, invented the cartomizer. This is a device that has the heating coil inside the liquid chamber. These e-cigs have the appearance of traditional cigarettes and are referred to as cig-alike. The devices are small and portable.
Cigalikes dominated the vaping industry until new advancements came along. The internet played a major role in such improvements. Former smokers shared their stories and DIY methods of improving the performance of cig-alikes. This marked a new era in vaping history as vapers moved from simple cig-alike to complex mods.
By 2011, as a result of online forums such as ECF, the first generation of Open Tank Systems hit the market. The Open Tank Systems include interchangeable batteries with open tanks or clearomizers. They are described as Open Systems because they can be used with different vape juices, different batteries types, and variable voltage.
The year 2014 was a crucial point for the e-cig industry. Open Tank Systems became the most popular electronic cigarette device on the market surpassing the cig-alike. This new trend in the e-cig market saw the sale of Open Tank Systems rocket to more than $500 million per year.
Electronic cigarettes evolved from small portable devices that resembled traditional cigars to become more sophisticated devices with lots of features. In terms of design, vaping devices became bigger some resembling a small box instead of a cigarette stick.
However, it seems like we are going full circle to the initial style of vaping devices today. The current trend in the industry is small and portable devices. This trend started in the year 2017 and has continued throughout 2018.
One device that symbolizes this trend is the Juul pod. The Juul is the creation of Stanford design student graduates Adam Bowen and James Monsees. It is compact and portable. It uses the algorithmic puff for consistency and temperature control. These are some of the features that make the Juul stand out.
The two students initially made the design to provide smokers with a small device (almost the size of a cigarette) so that they can easily switch to vaping. However, unlike the standard cig-alike, the Juul features advanced technology which makes it comparable to some advanced vaping devices.
Experts are of the opinion that the vaping devices will continue to get smaller but more powerful devices as technology advances.
You’ll find many different types of vaping devices at stores such as Slim’s E-Juice.
